The bags are wound on a paper core and boxed, and it's the box that loads into the dispenser. Bags come out through a perforated opening in the face, the way a tissue box works, and the core stays in the box even after the last bag is out. If you find a box in yours, you're on roll bags.
The bags come in cards with a punched cardboard header that hangs off the prongs inside the dispenser, and you pull them one at a time. If you find a header card hanging off a prong, you're on header bags.
